Many groups and individuals worked hard and contributed a lot to the various dimensions of the rescue and relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina. The Jewish community has been blessed by the generosity of our brethren all over the world. Major Jewish organizations such as the UJC have played an important role in those efforts as well the rebuilding of the New Orleans Jewish community. The worldwide Chabad Lubavitch Movement mobilized in an unprecedented manner, utilizing the power if its network of thousands of centers around the globe, to come to the aid of the New Orleans Jewish community. Spurred by the burning love for their fellow Jews implanted within them by the Rebbe, Chabad Shluchim and members rose to the occasion and helped thousands of people in a very real way. There are many layers to this heroic story that will never be told because they occurred in an unassuming manner. We do attempt to share some of the highlights of the Chabad Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort.
Two years later, though much progress has been made in New Orleans and people are working to get their lives back in order, many are still living in trailers or out of their homes. Many are still struggling for basic financial survival. People are still suffering emotionally and psychologically. Chabad was the last to leave and one of the first to return. We have helped thousands of people and we continue to assist people financially, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually. Through the generous support of the thousands of people that contributed to Chabad’s Hurricane Relief Effort, the burden has been eased for many people. Through the thousands of acts of goodness and kindness a light shines through the thick blanket of darkness that was draped over the New Orleans area. It is our hope that this little light will dispel that darkness completely resulting in peace and harmony for New Orleans and the entire world through the final redemption speedily.
